“Before moving to New York I had no records with the Swedish police, never had my fingerprints taken, no eye retina scans or DNA samples. Then naturally, to enter the land of the free, I first had to surrender and submit every single bit of data about myself. This of course made perfect sense, but I soon saw that seeking admission to the U.S. was a meticulous process of losing my rare and precious (virtual) privacy. Now, being able to spend six years in America is a huge privilege. I’ve grown and learned unspeakably much and am eternally grateful in so many ways. But all good adventures have their challenges and perils. And I saw this very same dilemma played out in so many ways. In fact, the whole world seems to be facing the same question: What rights are we ready to lose for the idea of safety? What privileges are we willing to sacrifice for the concept of freedom?”
